casiotone for the painfully alone - scattered pearls

another throwback today, this time it's casiotone for the painfully alone with the song "scattered pearls" which was released on the album etiquette in 2006.  i love the name of the 'band,' which is actually a solo project for Owen Ashworth.  Yuri introduced me to this song and I instantly fell in love with it, singing it for days.  There are live versions out there with Owen singing the song, but the album release of the song features Jenny Herbinson.  I think it's her sweet sweet voice that makes the song so charming.  In an interview Owen said "I can't remember why Jenny sang 'Scattered Pearls.' Maybe I just had a 'feeling about it.' I get a lot of 'feelings about things.' I like the idea of using different singers sort of as actors because all of the songs have different characters.'"  Interesting, no?

the black ghosts - repetition kills you

i first learned about this song from a great indie party mix by phdj that i downloaded here from the blog HYPERBOLE. just the other day daniel asked me to play just that song instead of the whole mix and i realized i had never heard the whole song.  i was surprised by how much i liked it, it's so much better than the tiny treatment it gets in the mix.

the black ghosts are a uk-based duo who started working over the internet and created quite a bit of music before they had ever physically met.  this song actually came out two years ago, but i think it still fits well in today's music scene.  it features damon albarn, another english singer-songwriter who is best known as the lead songwriter for Gorillaz.

the song has received plenty of remix treatment, here are several of them, none of which i feel tops the original. my favorite is probably the RAC Remix or Emperor Machine, since they stay fairly true to the original song.  What I would really like is someone to make it into an epic dance track like the Twelves remix of "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance with You"

why am i doing this

i am a landscape architect in berkeley, california.  i work at a computer for most of the day, and i keep myself entertained by listening to music compiled from a variety of websites and blogs.  my friend niharika, former minobo collaborator and author of niharika in euros and nikki does san francisco asked me to start linking songs that i like on a blog so she could listen as well.  and that's exactly what i'm doing.  i'm going to try and list at least one song a day, and maybe over time categories of posts will evolve.. anyway, hope you enjoy
